Car Dashboard Warning Lights Meaning
Did a yellow triangle โ ๏ธ, oil can ๐ข๏ธ, or check engine light illuminate on your dashboard? Identify what the symbol means immediately and whether it is safe to keep driving.
The Golden Rule of Dashboard Lights:
RED LIGHTS: Pull over safely and shut off the engine immediately (e.g. Oil Pressure, Engine Overheating, Brake Failure). Continuing to drive can cause catastrophic engine destruction or loss of control.
YELLOW / AMBER LIGHTS: Caution. A system needs inspection soon (Check Engine, Low Tire Pressure, ABS), but driving to a mechanic or service station is usually safe.
Check Engine Light (MIL)
A solid check engine light signals an issue detected by the engine computer (OBD-II), ranging from a loose gas cap to a failing catalytic converter or oxygen sensor.
If the check engine light is flashing rapidly, it indicates a severe engine misfire that can destroy the catalytic converter. Pull over and turn off the engine immediately.
Oil Pressure Warning Light
The oil can symbol means your vehicle has dangerously low oil pressure or no oil circulating. Driving with this light on will permanently destroy the engine within minutes.
This does not merely mean oil is slightly low; it means the engine pump is unable to lubricate internal metal pistons and bearings, risking catastrophic engine seizure.
Engine Temperature / Coolant Light
The red thermometer in liquid light indicates that your engine has overheated. Continuing to drive will warp cylinder heads and crack the engine block.
Usually caused by a coolant leak, broken radiator fan, stuck thermostat, or failed water pump.
Tire Pressure Light (TPMS)
The exclamation mark inside a horseshoe tire symbol indicates that at least one of your tires is underinflated by 25% or more below the recommended PSI.
Cold winter weather frequently triggers this light because air pressure drops 1 PSI for every 10ยฐF drop in ambient temperature.
Battery / Charging System Light
The battery box symbol means the vehicleโs charging system is failing. The alternator is no longer charging the battery, and the car is running purely on remaining battery reserve.
The car will typically stall and lose power steering and lights within 10 to 20 minutes once the battery drains completely.
Brake Warning Light
A red brake light usually means the emergency parking brake is still engaged, brake fluid is critically low, or there is hydraulic pressure loss in the braking system.
If releasing the handbrake does not turn off the light, stop driving immediately as your stopping power is compromised.
Master Warning Light (Triangle Exclamation)
The master warning triangle with an exclamation point accompanies a secondary warning or message displayed on the instrument cluster screen.
Common on Honda, Toyota, and German vehicles, it flags issues such as a door ajar, washer fluid low, or a burned-out exterior headlight.
Traction Control / ESC Light
The car with swerving skid marks flashes when the vehicle senses wheels slipping on wet roads, ice, or loose gravel and automatically engages traction assistance.
If the light remains constantly illuminated without flashing, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or ABS wheel speed sensor has a fault and is disabled.
